The tale of the Stone Pit

There are many stories that the Amazons like to tell.  Among the favourites is the story of Nebka and Enju or as it is known - the tale of the Stone Pit.

The time is very many years ago, before the Amazons had formed together as a unified tribe. There were at that time two dominant tribes - the Arbos who were mainly forest dwellers and the Sophos who lived on the coast and the nearby islands.  The two tribes  were constantly at war with each other, which was wearing and costly for both communities.  So the elders of the two tribes met in a great congress  to decide on a better method of settling disputes.  After many days of debate the congress agreed that disputes should in future be decided by contests between their best female fighters.

It wasn't too long before the first disagreement over territory arose between the tribes and they turned to their newly agreed procedure for settling their dispute.  So in both tribes the elders started the process of selecting their chosen fighters who would represent their respective tribes:
