The lights were all aimed down at the arena with such intensity that Aimee had to screw her eyes up tight to stop herself from being blinded. As she walked out onto the red corner of the mat she looked upwards towards the audience, but because of the angle of the lights she could see nothing. This, she was to learn, was a fundamental requirement of a circuit match, the contestants must never see the audience.
Aimee stood on the balls of her feet on the red square, her breath coming in great laboured gulps. Suddenly, the audience started to clap and cheer. Aimee looked towards the opposite corner of the arena to see her opponent entering the arena.
